2: The Custom Cabin Covid Clapback
What a year. Seriously, what a year. When we set out to begin building custom cabins and treehouses back in February, we never saw any of this coming. Maybe if we’d known what 2020 had in store for us, we’d have gone to the beach and stayed there. I like to think differently, though. Among all the horrors and trials everyone has faced due to Covid we, at the Custom Cabin and Treehouse Company, have to count ourselves incredibly lucky. Working outdoors has meant, for the most part, we have been able to carry on with something resembling normal. Of course, nothing has been “normal” – we still opened our doors to the great outdoors to put our stamp on traditional carpentry for the very first time. But, we have had some incredible clients, forged some great new relationships, and added a few more faces to our team.
The thing we are all most proud of here is the way our builds have improved people’s lives in the unforseen circumstances. In the last few months alone we have constructed over half a dozen new bespoke buildings and, overwhelmingly, these have been projects designed to make sense of the “new normal” for our clients. We have built everything from outdoor pavillions, made for covid-compliant family gatherings, to outdoor guest houses, and home offices. The guest houses are not only a vital source of income for owners, whose work situations have changed, but are a sanctuary for those guests who have come to escape the city setting, and “shield” in a safe and beautiful working location. Most transformative of all, perhaps, are the number of home offices we have constructed, making the best possible fit of people’s strangely shaped new working lives.
So many of our customers are parents whose own lives, as well as their children’s have been completely transformed by the switch to working from home. Shifting work from the kitchen table to a new, fully insulated and powered, custom cabin in the garden has helped so many of our clients find silver linings in this, the strangest of years. What is more, our designs are built to last. These new functional spaces will be vital assets for years to come, weathering the winters in relative comfort, and enhancing the garden-havens they reside in. Already, for one of our clients, their offspring has boldly set up shop in one of our new office cabins, enabling them to start their career straight out of university. Also, we are honoured to hear that there is a very special event planned for our first grand-scale pavillion. The proud new owners have informed us they are planning an outdoor wedding, and with the south facing aspect, the sunset should shine upon a space we’ve provided that is filled with joy and togetherness.
To that end, we thank you all for your support this year. We do what we do with so much care and passion and, in a year, that could have seen us end before we began, we want to recognise all of you who have seen our quality and entrusted us with improving your lives. As a mark of our gratitude, we are making donations to the Oxford Crisis Cafe, providing Christmas lunches for some who would otherwise be left out in the cold. Our hope for next year is that we continue to grow, and bring new concepts to sustainable, traditional building. As a parting thought, I wanted to share something I heard one of our team express during a treehouse project, there’s wisdom in the woods for sure! I didn’t know this until I began building treehouses, but the storms that shake the trees and don’t break them, only make them take deeper roots and continue to grow.
Have a very happy christmas all.
